Dance for Children --Winter Update

(for students ages 3 and older, depending upon specific class guidelines)

For more than 50 years, Hochstein's Dance Program has provided opportunities for children, teens and adults, at any level, to expand their appreciation of the art of dance in a stress-free atmosphere that both encourages and challenges. Hochstein's program concentrates on the building blocks of technique, and the development and maintenance of healthy bodies. A variety of classes in dance styles including classical ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, tap and Latin/Caribbean, and Spanish/Flamenco are held in our beautifully renovated and spacious studios.
 
Many of Hochstein's Dance classes enjoy the benefits of live accompaniment.

Dance for Children    

Dance for Children offers a full range of sequential, guided instruction focusing on the joy, and enjoyment, of the art of dance. With an emphasis on nurturing the whole dancer, our professional faculty works with each student to develop confidence and creativity as well as technical and performance skills.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DANCE (ages 3–7)

Tuesdays, 4:15-5:00 pm
A fun introduction to the world of ballet! Little ballerinas will learn the names of the positions of the arms and legs, as well as movements such as tendu, plié, relevé, and passé through the use of games and songs.

Children’s African Dance & Culture

ages 5-7
Saturdays, 9:45-10:30 am
This class is designed with an African sensibility that allows children to feel the freedom of the body in motion. Children will learn that rhythm is inside them just waiting to come out through dance, songs, and percussion.

NEW! Dazzling Jazzers

ages 5-7
Mondays, 5:30-6:15 pm
Let your little jazzer learn beginning dance moves while engaging in fun stretching, jumping, and turning activities to promote coordination and flow.

Jazzy Juniors
ages 3–4

Children discover and explore the fun of movement and rhythms as they develop body awareness through creative games, stretches and beginning dance elements. Class is 45 minutes long.

Pre–Ballet
ages 5–6

This class is designed to foster interest in pursuing more advanced ballet techniques. Children will learn introductory ballet techniques as well as body awareness and movement exploration through games and exercises that are age appropriate. Class is one hour long.

BALLET
Ballet A, B

ages 7-12

Develop coordination, grace, musicality, flexibility and balance in this sequential program. Classes introduce and build skills in basic ballet technique and vocab.

Ballet I, II, III, IV
age 10+

This Intensive Training program continues a focus on the adagio and allegro movements while students develop strength, flexibility and placement. The Russian (Vaganova) Technique is introduced and studied as the students advance through levels I-IV. Students in Ballet II and above are encouraged to participate in three or more classes per week.

Preparation/Beginning Pointe
age 12+

For the intermediate student, this class concentrates on developing proper strength and alignment for pointe. Students should be in the Intensive Training Program and are required to participate in a minimum of two ballet classes per week. Faculty permission required. Ballet shoes used at first.


EXPLORING DANCE (ages 8–13)
Beginning Caribbean/Latin

Experience the combination of African, Taino, Arawak and Spanish elements in this introduction to Latin rhythms, movement, and folklore.

Children's Spanish/Flamenco
Lisa Piccione, Instructor
ages 8–13
Wednesdays, 4:15-5:15 pm

This class will introduce beginning Spanish/Flamenco techniques, such as use of hands, arms, body carriage, heelwork, and the use of castanets. Through introduction to several of the basic palos of Flamenco, such as tangos, soleá por bulerías and alegriás, students will explore movement through new rhythms, and individual expression will be encouraged.

Children's Jazz

Using jazz and contemporary music (including blues, pop, lyrical and theatrical), this class introduces the traditional jazz form and explores its origins in ballet.

Children's Tap

Thursdays, 5:15-6:15 pm

Become acquainted with great music and lots of fun with this highly rhythmic, foot-focused dance form.

Ballroom Sampler
Maureen Hickey, Instructor
ages 10-17
Saturdays, 10:30-11:30 am

Join the national craze and be your own dancing star! Learn to move gracefully like a "pro" as you learn the waltz and other fun ballroom styles.


FEE for Children’s Dance: $198 tuition payable in two installments of $99. Students enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein qualify for a reduced fee of $90 for one Children’s Dance or Foundations of Music class (payable in two installments of $45).
