Hochstein Convocation II
Honors Students, Staff, and Faculty

The Hochstein School recognizes and celebrates the achievements of its students, staff, and faculty at Honors Convocation II on Saturday, May 3 at 4:00 pm. This annual event features performances by Merit Scholarship winners, grades 5-12, and graduates of the prestigious Honors Certificate Program. Due to a high number of awardees, the 21 Scholarship winners and three Honors Certificate graduates were divided into two separate Convocations. Honors Convocation I was on April 6 where faculty and staff were recognized for years of service and ten Merit Scholarship winners performed.
A special addition to the musical performers at Honors Convocation II will be the recipient of the Dance Merit Scholarship, Katherine Marino. Among the faculty and staff recognized that afternoon a special honor will go to Dean of Students and Piano Department Co-Chair Gary Palmer, for his outstanding accomplishments on behalf of his students. He will receive the Hochstein 2008 Faculty Service Award. A reception follows the ceremony.
This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Hochstein Performance Hall located at 50 N. Plymouth Avenue in Downtown Rochester.
Hochstein Announces Merit Scholarship
Winners for Grades 5-8
Rochester, NY; The Hochstein School announces its 2008 Merit Scholarship Winners for grades 5-8. On March 7 (grades 5-6) and March 28 (grades 7-8) the awards were given for students who demonstrate musicianship and achievement in their instrument and display excellence in performance and artistic accomplishment:

Hochstein Recital Competition

Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 pm
The 2008 David Hochstein Recital Competition Winners Concert will take place on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 pm in the Hochstein Performance Hall. Benjamin Hopkins, piano, will play Beethoven’s Sonata in D major, Op. 10 No. 3; Chopin’s Ballade No. 2 in F major, Op. 38; and Gargoyle, Op. 29 No. 4 by Lowell Liebermann. Alexander Styk, violin, will perform Prokofiev’s Sonata Opus 115 for Violin, Movements 1 & 2 and Lalo Symphonie Espagnole Opus 21, Movement 1. Oleksandra Yurchenko will accompany him. Youri Spindler, clarinet will perform Fantasy Pieces, Opus 73 by Robert Schumann, accompanied by Nobuko Spindler; Hommage a M. de Falla by Kovacs, and
Duo Concertant by Milhaud, accompanied by Howard Spindler.
Featured performers are:
Benjamin Hopkins, piano is a senior at School of the Arts. He studies privately with Brian Preston; at SOTA, he works with John Gabriele and the piano department. Following three days of competition last September, Benjamin won the 2007 Thousand Islands International Piano Competition. Most recently he was named one of 27 high school pianists from around the world who will compete as semi-finalists in the Daniel Piano Competition at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina this spring. At the 2008 Rochester Philharmonic League Young Artist Auditions he won the Ness Award for pianists, Aldridge-Tinker Scholarship for instrumentalists, and the League’s Special Award, which provides him with the opportunity to perform with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at a future date. He has also been honored by the Rochester Piano Teachers’ Guild as a recipient of the Howard Hanson Award.
Clarinetist Youri Spindler is currently a senior at the Allendale Columbia School. He is also a diploma student at Eastman Community Music School, where he is the recipient of the school's Anthony Bruno Scholarship for clarinetists. He studies clarinet with Kenneth Grant; his former teachers include Philip Macone, Julianne Kirk and Brian
Wahrlich. Youri is the principal clarinetist of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra and he sings with the Allendale-Columbia High School Chorus. His academic interests center around English, history, drama and creative writing. Youri lives with his family in
the Upper Monroe neighborhood of the city; he attended Pinnacle School 35 and Monroe Middle School. He also enjoys martial arts, and has earned a black belt in karate.
Alexander Styk is a violin student of Patricia Sunwoo and a sophomore at Pittsford Mendon High School. Alexander has been studying violin since the age of four and this year has been selected for numerous musical awards and achievements including: 1st place in the Geneseo Young Artist Competition and 1st place in the String Division (Albright Award) for the Rochester Philharmonic League Young Artist Auditions. He won 2nd Place in the 2007 NYS Music Teacher’s Association Instrumental Competition. He has received a NYSSMA evaluation of 100% for May 2006 -07 and January 2008 and has participated in the NYSSMA All County Orchestra for all three years. He performs with his high school orchestra and is a member of a scholarship quartet group at Hochstein. Alexander also studies piano with Elinor Freer. In addition to music, Alexander is a Life Boy Scout, enjoys traveling, swimming and skiing.
The David Hochstein Recital Competition was held at the Hochstein School on February 10. It annually recognizes the outstanding musicianship and performance skills of advanced student musicians in grades 10-12 who reside in a nine county region surrounding Greater Rochester. Winners of the competition are selected from one of three categories: piano, strings, and woodwinds/brass/percussion/harp/guitar. The recital is being recorded for a later broadcast by WXXI-FM Classical 91.5/90.3 and HD.

Honor and Airs:
An International Journey Finger Lakes Concert Band Saturday, March 30, 2008 3:00 pm
On March 30, Saturday at 3:00 pm the Finger Lakes Concert Band in Canandaigua will present Honor and Airs: An International Journey with conductor Brian Story. American and foreign works include John Philip Sousa's "Comrades of the Legion March," written after WWI; Netherlands composer Jacob deHaan's "Kraftwerk," a large moving work using the "power" metaphor in experience and identity; Armenian Dances by Alfred Reed; "Hebrides Suite" by Clare Grudman; "Linden Lea" by Ralph Vaughan Williams; conductor Brian Story's "Lift High the Cross" a tribute to wind band composer Claude T. Smith; and Ralph Ford's Sea to Sky Suite, referring to Highway 99 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The concert will be held at the Smith Opera House in Geneva. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission, students free.
The Finger Lakes Concert Band is a part of the Hochstein at Canandaigua program, an extension of the Hochstein School, which is based at the Canandaigua Academy. Its mission is to offer high quality, affordable music and dance instruction to students of all ages and levels from throughout the Finger Lakes region. Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra FInal Concert, Auditions, and 2009 Concert Tour Announced
The orchestra will conclude its current season with a 7:00 pm Mother’s Day performance Sunday, May 11 in the Hochstein Performance Hall, conducted by Nancy Strelau.
Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams with the HYSO Strings and the Pines of Rome by Ottorino Resphigi. The concert will feature 2007-2008 HYSO Concerto Competition Winners John Kluge, cello, playing Antonin Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor and Nora Prener, oboe performing Eric Ewazen's Down a River of Time.

Auditions for the upcoming 2008-09 orchestra season will be held from May 15 – May 22
Students selected for HYSO will be invited to tour and perform throughout Switzerland and Italy in April 2009.
