SIMPLE GIFTS CONCERT FEATURES CANANDAIGUA
ACADEMY ALUMNA AS GUEST ARTIST
On Saturday, June 18th at 2:00 pm, a group of students, teachers and community members will present the second "Simple
Gifts" concert to honor the memory of Molly Brown, a young woman who aspired to become a concert violinist. This year’s concert includes Guest Artist Elizabeth Cary, who is a graduate of Canandaigua Academy and currently a teacher and touring musician based in the Philadephia area. The program also includes the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra conducted by Evan Meccarello; indie music by cellist Diana Glattly; a Mendelssohn trio with Canandaigua string teacher Chris Ieda, violinist Judy Loeb and pianist Ingmar Kanitscheider; a dance performance of Brandenburg’s Concerto No. 2 by Hochstein ballet students; and an arrangement of Simple Gifts, performed by teachers and students playing side-by-side and conducted by Hochstein faculty member Nancy Strelau. The performance of Simple Gifts will be dedicated to the memory of Ned Wolf, whose wife Colleen is a dedicated Hochstein teacher and the person who suggested the idea of a teacher/student collaboration in an end of year concert.
In an effort to carry on Molly’s legacy, the proceeds will benefit scholarships for students to attend Hochstein at Canandaigua’s Chamber Music Workshop, as well as the programs of Hochstein at Canandaigua. This one-week summer camp for experienced middle and high school musicians is directed by Hochstein faculty Kathleen Murphy Kemp and Angel OuYang. Molly Brown’s mother, Marie Brown, says “Molly would have been passionate about this workshop. From her first introduction to the violin at the end of third grade, it was her most constant companion. Molly joined the fiddlers’ club, played in the string quartet, and performed with the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, as well as attending the Fredonia String Camp each summer. Her love of music, of children and her giving nature prompted us to ask Hochstein if they would be interested in hosting a Memorial Concert in her honor.”
The concert will be held at Canandaigua Elementary School, 90 West Gibson Street, Canandaigua. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5.00 for children, with a family maximum of $20.00, and are available at Hochstein at Canandaigua, Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame, Mobile Music, and Renaissance II. More information about this event is available by calling Hochstein at Canandaigua (585-396-3778).
