Hometown: I was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but consider Rochester my hometown now.

Favorite place to travel: is Austria.

JOSEF HANSON

Hometown: Frederick, MD. Rochester has been my home since 2002.

Favorite place to travel: Europe.

Favorite or most influential teachers were: Brian Hinkley (HS band director), Wayne Wells (former trombonist, Annapolis Brass Quintet), Richard Grunow (Eastman School of Music).

When I’m not at Hochstein, you can find me: at the University of Rochester, teaching and managing the performance program on the River Campus.

People with whom/Places I’ve performed include: Recently, I led the UR Brass Choir (a group I founded in 2008) on tour to Washington D.C., where we performed at the National Basilica, National Presbyterian Church, and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Favorite things to do in Rochester are: to go fishing or boating, root for the Knighthawks, visit the Finger Lakes, explore villages like Fairport or Brockport.

What I most admire about my students is: their simple love of music. Most of my “students” are retirees living at Ferris Hills, and they inspire me with their unbounded love of classical music. Most college music majors don’t appreciate music the way that older generations do—it’s incredible!

My favorite restaurant is: SEA Restaurant on Monroe Ave.

IVAN TREVINO

trevinoInstrument/Department: Music Lab Director/ Percussion / Composition

Joined Hochstein Faculty in: 2010.

Ivan Trevino is a musician who wears many hats. He’s a rock drummer at heart, and brings that spirit into other avenues of his life, such as classical percussion, songwriting, and teaching.

He loves creating all kinds of music, whether it’s with his cello rock band Break of Reality, or composing marimba works like Memento, which garnered him an international composition award in 2007. He also loves to play guitar, (even once in a mariachi band, and yes, he had to wear that funny costume), and was a serious saxophonist for about six years.
While artistry is a priority, he understands the importance of having an entrepreneurial spirit. He takes pride in the fact that Break of Reality has sold 30,000 albums worldwide, not for the numbers, but for the fact that they’ve done it as an unsigned music group. Ivan’s music business savvy was noticed by the magazine Percussive Notes, which published his article “The Basics of Self Publishing” in 2008.
Ivan has played Carnegie Hall, the SXSW music festival in Austin, and other great venues, but his favorite continues to be the 59th Street subway station, where Break of Reality grew to be one of NYC’s favorite underground music groups, literally.
Ivan has a Master’s Degree in percussion performance from The Eastman School of Music, along with a Bachelor’s in percussion performance and music education. He also received a Professional Certificate in Music Business from Berklee College of Music’s Extension School.
His upcoming projects include an appointment as Director of The Music Lab at Hochstein School of Music and Dance, “I Can’t Sing, (But I Like To)”, a set of songs that explores the possibilities of the marimba as a singer-songwriter instrument, and “Into The Air”, a marimba duet for Ivan and Michael Burritt.
Ivan currently lives in Rochester, NY with his wife Amanda, and isn’t quite sure how she puts up with him.

Places Lived: Born and raised in Victoria, TX. Lived in Rochester, NY and the NJ / NYC area. Currently back in Rochester teaching at Hochstein.

Musical Influences: I like lots of music; Bjork, Liam Finn, Reich, Radiohead, Jerseyband, Coheed and Cambria, and many more.

Things you may not know: I can’t ride a bike or swim.

Favorite Cuisine: Mexican.

Activities Outside of my professional rock band, Break of Reality: Running, eating cereal at any time of the day, boxing aficionado, playing soft orchestral snare drum excerpts, watching Curb Your Enthusiasm.
