Festivals

Band, Chorus, and Orchestra Festival

This Festival is designed for Junior and Senior High School ensembles as both an evaluative festival as well as an educational enrichment opportunity. Each ensemble will have an hour reserved for them. In that hour, the groups will perform three selections while two clinicians evaluate the performance on tape and make written comments. Following the performance, the clinicians will work with the ensemble for the remaining time. The clinicians are all highly regarded music educators.

Ensembles may be evaluated for a grade or elect to receive the written and taped comments, only. If an ensemble elects to receive a grade the NYSSMA Manual will form the basis for the level of performance. Two selections should be made from the manual at the same level and the third can be from any source. You may also choose to be graded and select pieces not in the manual by submitting a score of the piece ahead of time. Label the selection with the grade you feel it qualifies for and send for review and approval to: Brian Story, 3639 East Ridge Run, Canandaigua, NY  14424. If you are performing for comments only, you may perform music from any source, and need not request prior approval. The evaluation system and copies of grading sheets will be sent to directors after registration.

Bands and orchestras will perform in the Hochstein Performance Hall. Choruses will perform in the beautiful Sanctuary of the nearby Downtown Presbyterian Church. Link to application here.

Opportunities for the Advanced Student

Merit Scholarships are awarded annually to selected students following an audition, and based on achievement and performing ability. Scholarship awards in varying amounts, as well as honorable mentions, are presented in the Elementary, Junior High, Senior High, and Dance categories. Following are named scholarships awarded each year: Dorothy Pund Allen Memorial Scholarship; Walter J. Holloran Memorial Scholarship; Lillian Taylor Hubbard Memorial Scholarship; Lois P. Lines Memorial Scholarship; Joseph Parungao Memorial Scholarship; Sydney R. Rubin Memorial Scholarship; Ruth Salzman Memorial Scholarship; Dr. David Skvorak Scholarship; Knights of Pythias Scholarships; the Christina & Diana Wang Memorial Scholarships; and the Donald G. Yungkurth Memorial Scholarship.

The Honors Chamber Ensemble Program offers serious students who play at an advanced level an opportunity to celebrate a love of music with others at the same level of performance, while exploring a broad repertoire for the small ensemble. The program features weekly coaching sessions, a master class component, and a variety of performance opportunities. Scholarships are awarded based on audition, and members of the Honors Chamber Ensemble Program are expected to perform at venues throughout the community.

Hochstein’s Scholarship Dance Ensemble (ages 12 and older) provides ensemble experience in ballet, modern, and other styles for the serious dance student who is on pointe. Placement in the ensemble is based on fall auditions.

The Honors Certificate Program provides both structure and challenge for the serious student. Entrance to this program is gained by audition, and a certificate is awarded to those who complete the following requirements: enrollment in the program for a minimum of two years, music theory and music history courses, yearly performance examinations, and a final solo recital.

Auditions

Though auditions for placement in orchestra, chamber ensembles, and jazz combos typically take place in May for the school year beginning the following September, openings may still be available.
