Featuring Cordancia Chamber Orchestra; Evan Meccarello, conductor and artistic director; Sophia Klin, violin, performing music by Mabel Daniels, Piazzolla, and Ravel.

Drawing on the theme of nature, the forest, and winter melting into spring, Cordancia performs Deep Forest by American composer Mabel Daniels, who was inspired by the woods at the MacDowell Colony artist retreat in New Hampshire, and “Winter” and “Spring” from Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires) by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.

The program concludes with selections from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite. Each of the five movements illustrate fairy tales, including Tom Thumb who leaves a trail of breadcrumbs to find his way back in the forest and one that depicts a fairy garden.

Formed in 2009 by violinist Pia Liptak and oboist Kathleen Suher, Cordancia Chamber Orchestra performs classical music concerts throughout the year at various locations in the greater Rochester area. Its award-winning programming blends eclectic, vibrant, and lesser-known music with traditional classical repertoire. The full chamber orchestra consists of up to 40 talented performers who are brought together from many areas of the Rochester community. 

Winner of the senior division of Cordancia’s Nico Toscano Young Musician Competition, guest soloist Sophia Klin is a 2023 graduate of the Eastman School of Music. She performs as a violinist around the region with ensembles such as the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphoria, and more. She joined the ROCmusic faculty in 2023 as a violin instructor.

This special event highlights the excellence of Hochstein’s students and faculty and includes ensembles from various Hochstein programs, including the Hochstein Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese; chamber groups; and guitar ensembles, led by John Wiesenthal.

The concert is named in memory of Dr. Max Presberg, a Hochstein student in his youth, a former board member, and a long-time supporter and friend of Hochstein. The concert is free.

Join the Vertex Saxophone Quartet for an eclectic program featuring music that moves and grooves!

The Vertex Saxophone Quartet is a unique and versatile group of saxophonists who are active performers and educators in the Rochester, NY area. Founded in 2009, the Vertex Saxophone Quartet has performed in schools, churches, and formal concert locations and for special events in the greater Rochester area and is equally at home in the classical, jazz, and popular styles of music.

One of Spotlight on Faculty’s most popular concerts returns!

Celebrate the piano with works for one to four pianos and two to 16 hands, and a whole lot of fun with members of Hochstein’s piano faculty.

Featuring the Hochstein Piano Department: Jamilya Arzanesh, Paula Rodney Bobb, Yi-Wen Chang, Willie LaFavor, Gary Palmer (Co-Chair), E-Na Song, Joseph Werner (Co-Chair), and Oleksandra Yurchenko.

Admission at the door is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff. The concert lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.

Hochstein’s Philharmonia Orchestra (grades 6-11) is directed by John Fetter and Matt Osika, Sinfonia Strings (grades 4-9) is directed by John Fetter and Terry Smith, and Concertino Strings (grades 1-5) is directed by Marcos Kreutzer.

Featuring Koki Tanaka, violin, and E-Na Song, piano.

Emotions are personal feelings. Koki Tanaka and E-Na Song will guide you through a journey of romantic pieces to showcase the variety of emotions that music can evoke. 

Brahms’ short piece Sonatensatz is particularly energetic, filled with a multitude of emotions. Fritz Kreisler was a master of expression on his violin, and Three Old Viennese Dances show a subtle performer’s personal touch. 

Amy Beach’s Romance introduces fluid lyricism and even more heightened emotions of late romantics. She was known for her expressive melodies and sophisticated harmonies.

Paul Shoenfeld's Four Souvenirs is a modern take on classical folk or popular music genre. All four movements – Samba, Tango, Tin Pan Alley, and Square Dance – require virtuosity of both violin and piano, and the music will take you briefly to a jazz club where you can sit back and enjoy the different mood from the previous pieces you just heard.

Born in Korea, Dr. E-Na Song is a concert pianist, collaborative pianist, and educator. As an active performer, she has performed throughout the US, Poland, Spain, Austria, and Korea. Dr. Song is an adjunct faculty at Rochester Institute of Technology and Roberts Wesleyan University and on the piano faculty of The Hochstein School and Roberts Community Music School. 

Born in Japan, later moving to the United States, Dr. Koki Tanaka started playing the violin at age 6 and made his debut at age 18 at Benaroya Hall, performing with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and University of Washington, he has given solo recitals at Eastman School of Music, SUNY Brockport, George Eastman House, and Nazareth University.

Featuring Antara Winds: Diane Smith, flute; Judith Ricker, oboe; Margaret Quackenbush, clarinet; Blaire Koerner, bassoon; and W. Peter Kurau, horn.

Founded in 1982, Antara Winds have appeared regularly on Live from Hochstein and have performed extensively throughout the Greater Rochester area including appearances with the Rochester Oratorio Society, Perinton Concert Band, and Society for Chamber Music in Rochester.  

Antara Winds delights in bringing audiences the music of contemporary composers. They have premiered two works written specifically for Antara: Verne Reynolds’ Antara Music (2003), and Libby Larsen’s Blue Windows: After Marc Chagall (2005).
